We relied on Skybox for network security policy management. When the company collapsed, vendor support disappeared with it. We had to replace a product embedded in our firewall review process without creating a second operational mess.
That experience changed how I compare NSPM tools. Features matter, but so do migration effort, vendor stability, device coverage, and the amount of work required to keep the platform useful after deployment.
This article records the comparison criteria that came out of that replacement exercise. It does not publish the employer’s lab scores, commercial terms, or final selection. Product behaviour also changes by version and license, so treat the observations as a shortlist guide and verify them in your own proof of concept.
The three names that came up most often were AlgoSec, Tufin, and FireMon. None is a direct drop-in replacement for every Skybox deployment. They solve overlapping problems with different priorities.
What an NSPM platform needs to do
The basic job is to turn firewall policy into something a team can inspect and maintain. In a mixed estate, that usually means:
- Importing policy from firewalls, cloud controls, and related network devices
- Tracing traffic across more than one enforcement point
- Finding unused, duplicate, shadowed, or overly broad rules
- Checking policy against internal standards and compliance requirements
- Recording ownership, approvals, implementation, and expiry for changes
- Showing the effect of a proposed change before an engineer deploys it
The difficult part is not generating a report. It is keeping topology, objects, ownership, and business context accurate enough that engineers trust the report.
AlgoSec
AlgoSec puts application connectivity near the center of its model. That is useful when a rule review starts with a business application rather than a device. A team can ask which flows support an application, what a migration will affect, and which policy changes are required.
I would put AlgoSec on the shortlist when application owners participate in firewall changes and the main problem is connecting business services to network policy.
The tradeoff is that application context does not appear by itself. Someone still has to map flows, owners, and dependencies. Test how much manual maintenance that model needs in your environment. Also test the interfaces your engineers will use every day. A capable policy engine is less valuable if routine investigation takes too many clicks.
Tufin
Tufin is strongest when topology and policy orchestration drive the decision. It can model the path between source and destination, identify the devices involved, and use that information in change workflows.
That suits large hybrid networks where one request may cross several firewalls and routing domains. It also helps teams that want a central policy model across different vendors.
The cost is operational weight. Discovery, topology accuracy, licensing, and workflow design all need attention. During a proof of concept, use a path that crosses several real devices. A clean lab with one firewall will not show whether Tufin can model your network reliably.
FireMon
FireMon focuses on policy visibility, risk analysis, and continuous assessment. It is a sensible candidate when the immediate need is to find risky rules, measure compliance, and detect policy changes across a large device estate.
Its APIs also matter if your team wants to connect analysis to internal automation or reporting. Do not judge that from an API checklist. Build one small integration during the evaluation and see how much cleanup the returned data needs.
If cloud policy is a major part of the purchase, test your exact mix of cloud controls. Broad support claims do not tell you whether the product handles the objects and workflows your team uses.

This table is a starting point, not a buying recommendation. Product capability changes by version and license. Your device mix can reverse the result.
How I would run the proof of concept
Use the two strongest candidates against the same ugly slice of the network. Include duplicate objects, stale rules, multiple vendors, a cloud control, and a change that crosses several devices.
Ask each platform to complete the same tasks:
- Discover the devices and build the relevant topology.
- Trace an application flow from source to destination.
- Find unused and overly permissive rules.
- Model a change and identify every enforcement point involved.
- Produce evidence for one compliance requirement.
- Export the result through an API or your normal reporting path.
Record false positives, missing context, processing time, manual corrections, and the steps an engineer has to repeat. Those measurements are more useful than a sales demonstration.
Keep a simple evidence log beside the score. For every claim such as “the platform traced the path,” save the tested source, destination, devices identified, missing hops, runtime, and manual corrections. That prevents a successful demo flow from becoming a blanket claim about the whole estate.
My decision rule
Choose the product that your team can keep accurate.
AlgoSec deserves a close look when application connectivity drives policy work. Tufin fits teams that need topology-aware orchestration across a complex estate. FireMon fits teams that put continuous rule analysis and risk visibility first.
The final choice should come from your own policy data. If a product cannot explain the messiest firewall in the estate, it will not become more convincing after you sign a multi-year contract.
